12.14.09 – An Iconic Publication
The second issue of PROOF!, a free publication from Johnston Printing, recently hit the streets. Developed, designed, and written by Anderson Mraz Design, PROOF! is a biannual look at the creativity and viability of the Spokane-area visual arts community. Each issue focuses on a single artist; the first, sent to subscribers in May, featured the photography of Leonid Bergoltsev.
The current issue explores the work of Brother Claude Lane. A Spokane native, Brother Claude is a Benedictine monk who resides at Mount Angel Abbey in St. Benedict, Oregon. He’s a lifelong artist and a rare talent – and, over the course of the last 25 years, has become an acknowledged expert in Byzantine iconography.
“We felt that PROOF! was an opportunity for Johnston to concentrate on two of its core brand attributes,” explained AMD principal and creative director CK Anderson. “Specifically, serving the unique printing and fulfillment needs of the Spokane area’s creative community, and a history of supporting the region’s visual arts community.”
AMD felt it should be a continual promotion, Anderson added, providing an ongoing opportunity to showcase great talent along with Johnston’s expertise.

12.03.09 – Local Practice Extends Brand to Web, Print
When nationally known cancer research and treatment specialist Dr. Stephen P. Anthony opened a practice in Spokane in September 2008, he had already turned to Anderson Mraz Design for help in developing a logo, tagline, and promotional materials. Since then, Evergreen Hematology & Oncology has grown their practice – and, with additional help from AMD, their brand as well.
A new website (evergreen4cure.com) went live in April; a print ad campaign was launched around the same time to introduce the public to the expertise found within the practice; and a brochure was created to provide incoming patients with high-level information about Evergreen, including what they can expect in the way of treatment.
“Our goal is to provide our patients with information and choices,” explained Dr. Anthony. “AMD helped us to create a website... more > (PDF 1.4Mb)
08.10.09 – AMD Helps Put Science within Reach
Thanks to vision, hard work, and generous contributions, Spokane is getting a little closer to a world-class science center. And this summer, the folks responsible decided it was time to give the public a sneak peek of what’s to come: MOBIUSLAB, a temporary exhibition located at NorthTown Mall that gives visitors a hands-on look at energy, sound, motion, magnetics, and more.
Anderson Mraz Design teamed with Desautel Hege Communications and Mobius Spokane – the organization responsible for Mobius Kids and the planned Mobius Science Center – to convert a vacant retail space into an entertaining and interactive science experience for kids of all ages.
“It’s exciting to work on a project that’s so important to the community,” explained AMD principal and creative director CK... more > (PDF 1.4Mb)
07.21.09 – AMD Designs 21st Consecutive Annual Report for Hecla
Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, is the oldest U.S.-based precious metals mining company in North America and the largest producer of silver in the U.S. Hecla and AMD’s relationship goes back to 1988 – the year AMD was founded – when the design firm created the first in a long line of annual reports for Hecla, along with the mining company’s website, tradeshow booths, and various print pieces.
2008’s annual report, themed “Facing the Challenge,” focuses on Hecla’s response to the global economic crisis. Rather than create a lavish, multi-page document, Hecla chose to wrap their SEC-mandated 10K report in a simple, straightforward message from president and CEO Phillips S. Baker, Jr.
In addition to design solutions and project management, AMD contributed to the report’s theme and cover messaging.
06.18.09 – AMD Punctuates New Architecture and Interiors Firm
When three veterans of Spokane’s architecture and interior design scene decided to strike out on their own, they came up with a clever name – then turned to Anderson Mraz Design to brand the firm. HYPHEN Architecture and Interior Design is led by Sheila Boyce, Anthony Janson, AIA, and Manasa Vishwanath. Whether individually or as a group, HYPHEN’s principals demonstrate a sophisticated design style that’s devoid of... more > (PDF 1.2Mb)
06.01.09 – AMD Brands New Spokane Wine Bar
Inspired by Venice’s Caffé Florian, Aaron and Katrina Kelly decided Spokane was ready for a place that offered patrons a cup of coffee in the morning, a glass of wine and a cheese plate in the afternoon, or champagne and dessert in the evening. Their dream was realized a month ago when they opened LeftBank Wine Bar, named for the Parisian district noted for attracting writers, artists, and philosophers – and conveniently located on the left bank of the Spokane River.m AMD was initially tasked with... more > (PDF 144K)
05.18.09 – And Now, for Something Completely Different...
When AMD was asked to help in the development of a promotional piece for Johnston Printing, the design firm jumped at the chance to do the unexpected.
“Just about every printing brochure shows off complicated tricks and techniques,” explained CK Anderson, principal and creative director at AMD, “not to mention a multitude of paper weights and finishes. We felt Johnston would be better served with a piece that reinforced their core brand attributes rather than capabilities that are no longer unique in the business.”
Those attributes, he added, are first, serving the unique and demanding needs of graphic design firms and advertising agencies, and second, the printing company’s unflagging support of the local arts community.
The result is PROOF!, a free, biannual publication that shines a light on the talented yet sometimes overlooked artists who have roots in Spokane. “This is a piece that shows off Johnston’s printing, binding, and mailing capabilities,” said Anderson. “More important, though, is it demonstrates their commitment to promoting area artists.”
Each issue will be produced by Johnston and focus on a single artist. The first, which was sent to subscribers in May, features the photography of Leonid Bergoltsev.
Strategically, because PROOF! has real value for its recipients, the publication is more apt to create top-of-mind awareness with Johnston’s target audience than the typical, overly embellished promotional piece. But it’s not just about tactics, according to Anderson. “This is who Johnston is,” he said.

01.09.09 – Minus one partner, it’s still Anderson Mraz Design
It was back on January 1, 1988 that CK Anderson and John Mraz founded the graphic design firm that bears their names. And now, 21 years later – to the day – Mraz has stepped down from his position as partner. He’ll continue at AMD as senior designer; Anderson has assumed the role of sole principal.
“This is part of a natural, planned progression,” explained Anderson. “It’s good for John, it’s good for AMD, and, most important, it’s good that our clients can still count on John’s expertise for what we both hope is a long time to come.”
After graduating from WSU in 1970 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, Mraz worked for a brief period of time in Portland. Since then, he’s spent his entire career in Spokane, including a stint as an instructor in the graphic design program at Spokane Falls Community College – where Anderson was his student. In 1987, what started as an arrangement to share studio space led the two friends to form Anderson Mraz Design.
“I like to think of it more as down-shifting,” said Mraz of his decision. “It allows me to continue to do what I love while spending more time with my family. Best of all, AMD will continue to be in good hands under CK’s leadership.”
